Questions & Answers

Ask a Question
  • Are these D&C Lake powders the pure pigment or do they have other ingredients cut in with them?

They are "Lakes".  The word "Lake" is the secret word to determine when something is a pure dye or not.

A pure dye is super intense and messy to work with and hard to measure, but their advantage is that they fully dissolve in their medium.

I wouldn't use the phrase "other ingredients cut in with them" as it suggests they are somehow adulterated or cheapened.  That is not why Lakes were created.   Lakes were created to offer the beauty of dyes but much less messy to work with, and easy to measure and control.  You can tell what substrate the dye is on by reading the full name of the product.  For example D&C Red #6 Barium Lake is on Barium.

Also, of note, pure dyes are more expensive than lakes.
